MOST COMMON NECKLACE LENGTHS:
Standard (or Princess) Length Necklaces: Standard length necklaces, typically around 45cm (18″), are the most versatile and popular choice. They’re perfect for everyday wear and suit almost any occasion. This length generally sits above the neckline of lower-cut tops and drapes nicely over crew necks and high-neck outfits. If you’re adding a pendant, it will fall into a flattering V shape that frames your face beautifully.
If you’re taller or have a larger frame, consider a matinee length necklace, usually around 55cm (22″), for a similar effect but with a bit more length.
Most of our necklaces come in the standard length, but with an added extension chain. This allows you to adjust the length to match a matinee style or anywhere in between, depending on your preference.
HOW TO MEASURE FOR A NECKLACE, CHAIN, OR PENDANT:
To find the right length, measure an existing necklace that you like or one that matches the outfit you plan to wear. A tape measure works best for this. If you don’t have a necklace to measure, use a piece of string, ribbon, or a soft measuring tape to determine what length feels right for you.
WHAT LENGTH OF NECKLACE WILL SUIT YOUR OUTFIT?
NECKLACE OR CHAIN LENGTH: | AVERAGE PLACEMENT: | LOOKS GOOD WITH: |
CHOKER | Press against the neck’s base | This length pairs beautifully with a variety of outfits, especially off-the-shoulder, crew, and boat necklines. However, if you have a larger frame or prefer looser-fitting necklaces, this length might not be the best choice for you. |
STANDARD/ PRINCESS | On the collarbone | This is the most popular necklace length, as it flatters most women and pairs well with a variety of outfits. If the necklace features a V-shaped pendant, it will likely look stunning with necklines like v-neck, surplice, or sweetheart styles. |
MATINEE | The space between the bust and collarbone | This length also complements a wide range of outfits, making it perfect for both business and casual wear. It works particularly well over collared shirts and higher necklines. If you’re tall or have a larger neck, consider this length as your go-to choice instead of the standard (princess) length. |
OPERA | A few centimetres beneath the breast or on it | This length is perfect for most high necklines, such as turtlenecks and boat necks, and adds a touch of elegance to evening wear. Depending on your build and the specific length, you can also wrap an opera-length necklace around your neck more than once to create a stylish double-stranded collar or choker. |
ROPE | Vary based on the style worn | A rope necklace refers to any style longer than opera length. These necklaces are typically designed to be wrapped around your neck multiple times to create a double-stranded look. You can also fold them in half, looping one end through the fold to create a chic lariat style. |
LAYERING | Vary according to choice | Layering necklaces are a stylish way to wear multiple necklaces of varying lengths together as a set. They pair well with a variety of necklines, giving you the freedom to experiment and create your own unique look by mixing and matching different styles. |
NO NECKLACE | N/A | If you’re opting for a very low plunge neckline or a high halter neck, it’s often best to skip the necklace and go for bold statement earrings or eye-catching cocktail rings instead. These accessories can make a stylish impact without competing with your outfit’s neckline. |
